There is more and more call for 4K projectors and it won’t be long until we wondered how we put up with plain old HD machines. At present though, there are very few 4K projectors aimed at the events industry. The models that have been released are at the very high end such as the 30000 Lumen Christie Boxer, Panasonic PT-RQ13K and Barco HDQ-2K40.
In January, East Photographic approached us. They wanted a 4K projector to project some images for a Photo shoot to launch the new Nike Football Shirts for Euro 2016.
After discussions, it seemed that the available 4K machines were going to be overkill and certainly over budget but we had a trick up our sleeves.
As the content was square, we would only be using about half of the native 3840×2160 resolution of a 4K projector. The solution we came up with was to blend two WUXGA (1920×1200) resolution projectors. These were blended in portrait giving us a resolution of 2200×1920, almost identical to what we’d use on a 4K machine!
The projectors chosen had to be 3-Chip DLP for the best quality output and to be able to be photographed. They also needed to be happy in portrait. The solution; a pair of the new Panasonic PT-RZ12K machines. With their laser light source, they’re happy in portrait. The shots speak for themselves and certainly justify the need for high resolution projection.
