We’ve done some interesting building projections over the years, but Heathrow Airport Control Tower is one of the most unusual.
The airport is a supporter of the National Autistic Society. For World Autism Day in April 2021, they chose to raise awareness for Hidden Disabilities.
The projection was only viable due to the lack of air travel as a result of the covid pandemic. Heathrow’s flight schedule is normally so jam packed that setting up a number of high-powered projectors on the tarmac would be impossible. Even then however, the risks were significant and planning was paramount.
Set in the centre of the airport, the iconic 87m tall tower is the highest in the country. Building Projections require a lot of light and for the tower, three Panasonic RZ31K projectors were blended vertically. These provided sufficient power to illuminate the tower with bright colourful content created by our design team in-house.
