2019 has already provided several commercials to keep our team busy. One of the more unique ones we’ve worked on was for the Halifax. This is the second advert that we’ve been part of for the bank and is a dramatic move away from the iconic cartoon character commercials. Although this one is still in keeping with the nostalgia vibe that’s been a big part of their TV ads in recent years. This creative and colourful ad shows the journey of a slinky springing around a home, illuminating the surfaces it touches as it moves.
During the weeks preceding the shoot, production designer Nathan Parker got in touch to discuss several elements to assess whether projection mapping might be the right solution for the illumination. Our area ended up being the living room floor and our task was to create a precise animated sequence to light up the individual floorboards as the slinky danced across it. With the aid of 3D models and a set of very specific instructions for the set-builder, a template was created, and content animated. We then mapped the content onto the floor using a trusty combo of projectors and media servers.
